1. Reserve a Port

Claim an available port (range 10000-10099, one per user):

ulab-hosting reserve

Check status:

ulab-hosting status

2. Set File Permissions

Grant read permissions so your server doesn't crash when your Kerberos ticket expires:

fs sa . system:anyuser read

3. Start Your Web Server

Run your server in the background using nohup:

Python:

nohup python3 -m http.server YOUR_PORT > server.log 2>&1 &

Node.js / npm:

PORT=YOUR_PORT nohup npm run dev > server.log 2>&1 &

Flask:

PORT=YOUR_PORT nohup python3 app.py > server.log 2>&1 &

4. Troubleshooting

Run the following command to check listening ports:

ss -tlpn

Look for 0.0.0.0:<PORT> to verify your server is running. The output will show what process is running it along with the PID:

LISTEN   0   5   0.0.0.0:10099   0.0.0.0:*   users:(("python3",pid=167488,fd=3))

If something is stuck or you need to restart, kill your process using its PID:

kill -9 <PID>

5. Release Your Port
